Björn Bartels studied chemistry at the University of Hannover (Germany), including a 6 months ERASMUS internship in the group of Stuart Warren at Cambridge University (England). After completing his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Günther Helmchen at Ruprecht Karls Universität Heidelberg (Germany) in 2001, he joined the group of Scott Denmark in Urbana-Champaign (U.S.) as a Feodor-Lynen postdoctoral fellow. In 2003, he started his industrial career as a chemist in high throughput chemistry at Altana Pharma in Konstanz (Germany), and in 2009 moved to F. Hoffmann - La Roche Ltd. (Switzerland), where he currently works as a medicinal chemist. In the meantime, he has worked on and led projects in various phases of the value chain, from target assessment to lead optimization to phase 1 supply, and in various therapeutic areas and target classes, such as ion channels, proteases, and GPCR's.
