After obtaining his MSci in Biochemistry and Biological Chemistry from the University of Nottingham, Phil moved to the University of Oxford in 2003 to carry out his organic chemistry PhD studies under the supervision of Prof. David Hodgson. Upon completion of his graduate studies in 2007, he moved to the University of California, Irvine to begin his postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Prof. Larry Overman as a Merck Sharp & Dohme Postdoctoral Research Fellow working on the total synthesis of alkaloid natural products. Despite the considerable draw of the sunny weather in Southern California, he moved back to the UK in mid 2009 and joined GSK, Stevenage as a medicinal chemist where he has worked since. Phil has worked largely on epigenetic targets with a more recent focus on bromodomain chemical probes.
